Day 64 of 280, first trimester

You are 9 weeks and 1 day

Your baby's welfare is your main concern, but however you're feeling, your baby is getting what she needs.

216 days until your due date

You may be very conscious of your health right now, but even if you've felt unwell this trimester, your baby has been taking what she needs from you. You have internal reserves of minerals and other substances, such as iron, and you're still absorbing some nutrients from what you eat. If you're worried about how many vitamins and minerals you're getting, you could take a prenatal vitamin for your own health. Keep taking folic acid and eating folate-rich foods.

Don't worry if you gain no weight in the first trimester, or even lose a little. Most weight gain happens in the second and third trimesters.

If you're vomiting a lot and struggling to keep food down, don't hesitate to see your ob/gyn.

The lowdown

He's "pregnant" too

Can your partner ever really understand what you're going through? A recent study found that some dads empathize without needing a fake pregnancy belly. Called Couvade syndrome, the symptoms expectant fathers reported ranged from morning sickness to backache, mood swings, and food cravings, although interestingly, it was often the woman who said her partner had them.

Couvade is thought to happen because men are so deeply involved in the pregnancy. Others think it may be jealousy (you're getting all the attention) or guilt at being responsible for your symptoms.

Focus on

Your body: Your changing breasts

The changes in your breasts come from an increased blood supply and rising pregnancy hormones, especially in the first 12 weeks. Before your pregnancy was confirmed, you may have felt tingling, especially around the nipples, as the blood supply increased.

  • From as early as 6–8 weeks, your breasts become bigger and more tender and may look different, with thread-like veins appearing.
  • At around 8–12 weeks, the nipples darken and may become more erect.
  • From as early as week 16, colostrum, the first milk, may leak from your breasts.
