Day 241 of 280, third trimester
You are 34 weeks and 3 days
As maternity leave approaches, you may be looking for ways to save money, and dressing your newborn doesn't have to be expensive.
39 days until your due date
Don't be shy about asking friends and family for hand-me-downs; those not planning more children will probably be glad to pass them on. Get together with women from your prenatal class for a swap session: many will have older children of a different sex from the new baby and no need for their pink T-shirts or polo shirts! The idea of "used" clothes may take getting used to, but most babywear is barely worn.
Look online for end-of-season sales and on auction sites, where you can often pick up designer items for a fraction of the price, and visit yard sales. Shop around: you don't need to pay a lot for things like sleep sacks, and supermarkets are often inexpensive. Adding an item to your weekly grocery shop means you'll barely notice the cost.
You'll probably also get lots of clothes as gifts when your baby is born. If you know exactly what you want, set up a gift registry at a favorite store or ask for gift certificates. When buying more expensive items, head for the three- to six-month rack so your baby gets plenty of wear out of them; it's disappointing when a newborn only wears a favorite outfit for a couple of weeks.
Focus on
Dads: A little squeamish?
It's normal to worry about getting through the day of the birth, and focusing on your partner and her needs can distract you and ease your anxiety. Try to build a good relationship with her caregivers over the coming weeks, so you feel able to raise worries and get the reassurance and information you need.
If you feel woozy on the day, try to leave the room, since the nurses and doctor will be focused on your partner. If there's no time, sit down straight away with your head lower than your hips, or lie down with your feet raised. Take slow, deep breaths to stop yourself panicking, and the feeling will pass quickly. Make sure you don't get too hot, and eat and drink regularly so low blood sugar doesn't make you faint.
