Day 79 of 280, first trimester

You are 11 weeks and 2 days

The dating scan is reassuring because it's a chance for your baby's progress and development to be checked thoroughly.

201 days until your due date

At the scan, your pregnancy is dated by your baby's crown-to-rump length (CRL), because he is, and will stay, quite curled up. He can bend his spine and stretch his neck, so the measurement has to be taken with him in a particular position, which can take a while. It's used to estimate your due date, which may differ from the one you worked out yourself.

This first scan should show all four limbs, the hands and feet, the spine, some aspects of brain development, the fluid-filled stomach, and the bladder. From now on, your baby's kidneys make small amounts of very dilute urine, and the bladder starts to fill.

As a matter of fact

Due dates are estimates

Dating scans only give an estimate, and there's only about a 5 percent chance of giving birth on your due date.

So keep the date in mind, but don't expect your baby to stick to it!

Ask a Doctor

I've had lots of symptoms and don't feel my body is my own. How can I relax and enjoy pregnancy?

Not every woman adapts well to pregnancy, and coping with symptoms and worries such as weight gain can make you feel out of control. The best way to cope is to embrace the changes and stay in touch with your body by exercising and taking time to focus on what's happening inside you. We spend most of our lives paying attention to the outside world and very little to what's happening inside.

Spend a few minutes each day on deep breathing and relaxation, and consider learning some pregnancy yoga and meditation.

The dramatic changes in your body may be mirrored by big emotional swings. Some days you may feel elated about becoming a parent, and other days overwhelmed and anxious.

Perhaps the nine months of pregnancy are nature's way of giving us time to get used to becoming parents, deal with our emotions, and prepare for the birth. So try to relax, but if you feel really anxious, talk to your doctor.
