Day 61 of 280, first trimester

You are 8 weeks and 5 days

Your pregnancy is naturally on your mind, so find ways to share that with your partner.

219 days until your due date

Just when you want to feel close to your partner, your relationship may be changing and feel quite strained. Men often say their pregnant partners are more sensitive or react differently, and that this can be hard to handle.

Your relationship will inevitably change, because going through pregnancy together is momentous, but if you keep talking, you'll be able to support each other. Being united now will help you through the first year of parenting.

Early on, your partner may find it hard to relate to the pregnancy: your body hasn't changed much yet, and he hasn't seen the baby on a scan. You, on the other hand, are very aware of it and going through many physical and emotional changes.

He may need longer than you to get used to becoming a parent and may worry about practical things such as lifestyle changes and money. Talking openly can ease anxieties for both of you. Remember that although the physical changes are happening to you, he has feelings too and this is a big change for him. If you've told family and friends, the attention may all be on you, and he may feel left out, which often gets worse as the pregnancy goes on and after the baby arrives.

Find out what's worrying him and look for ways to involve him more, if he'd like that. If you have a good circle of friends, encourage him to spend time with men who've been through being an expectant dad.

Ask a Mum

Our apartment is small. Should we avoid moving while I'm pregnant?

We started moving, but thankfully it fell through, because it was very stressful and that kind of pressure isn't advisable in pregnancy. We stayed in our apartment until our baby was one, and it was fine. Small babies need very little beyond being fed, loved, changed, and stimulated, and much of the equipment you think you need isn't necessary. If you have room for a crib, a stroller, a drawer for baby clothes, and a corner for toys, you'll manage in a small space for now.
