Day 264 of 280, third trimester

You are 37 weeks and 5 days

With a new arrival on the way, it's important to prepare the little members of your household.

16 days until your due date

How you introduce the new baby depends on your children's ages. A toddler may be completely unfazed, more interested in the baby's toys than in having a new brother or sister. An older child may be shocked and jealous of a baby who seems to steal the limelight and take Mommy and Daddy's attention.

Prepare your child several weeks ahead, explaining that the baby will need lots of time and attention, will need feeding and changing often, and probably won't be much fun for a few months. Focus on how your child can be a great helper, and show them what the baby will need. Borrow library books about how families change when a baby arrives, and ask your child how they feel and what they think will be different.

Encourage your child to choose a gift for the baby, and find something they really want as a gift "from" the new sibling. Ask grandparents or close friends to arrange some treats or outings for your child, now and after the birth, so they're kept busy and get extra attention.

Ask a Doctor

My mom had a difficult delivery with me. Am I likely to have the same experience?

Some say you'll have the same kind of delivery your mom had with you: early or late, very quick or slow and assisted. This isn't necessarily true. Depending on your mom's age, obstetrics has probably advanced a lot since then, and even if you face the same hurdles, they may be handled differently. You may also be healthier and stronger than she was, so don't assume you're in for a difficult labor just because she had one.

Building a bond between siblings

Encourage a bond between your older child and the baby by asking them to imagine what the baby is doing inside Mommy. Invite them to suggest names, but don't promise to use them!
