Day 179 of 280, second trimester

You are 25 weeks and 4 days

All the nerve cells are now on the surface of your baby's brain; next they need to connect with each other.

101 days until your due date

Your baby's brain is so complex that it needs the whole pregnancy not only to grow but to mature, constantly forming new connections and sensory pathways.

The nerve cells of the gray matter started deep in the brain, on the outer surface of the lateral ventricles (one in each hemisphere). The ventricles contain the choroid plexus, a loose, seaweed-like structure that makes the fluid bathing the brain and spinal cord. This constantly circulating fluid protects and cushions the brain from the hard skull.

The slow, wave-like outward movement of these nerve cells, which began over 12 weeks ago, is now complete. Resting near the brain's surface, the cells now need to mature, branching out to make many connections (synapses) with other nerve cells. The brain's surface is very smooth now, but as the cortex matures and forms six distinct layers, it takes on its familiar wrinkled look.

Focus on

Your belly: To show or not to show?

Whether you show off your belly in figure-hugging clothes or choose looser styles that last longer and hide how pregnant you are is up to you:

  • If you're happy to show it, stretchy fabrics that expand with you may be comfortable, although your skin may be sensitive to anything tight, and tight tops draw attention to your breasts.
  • If you'd rather not show your shape, choose baggier tunics, smocks, and overshirts, which may be more comfortable and hide your bump for longer.
  • If you want to bare your belly, do it when it's warm enough; you may even fit into some pre-pregnancy tops.

Ask a Doctor

I'm getting quite big. Should I change my swimming style?

In the final couple of months, you may need a more comfortable stroke. Many women choose breaststroke, which may also help your baby get into the best position for birth.

If you don't feel up to swimming laps, just relax in the pool. The water takes pressure off your abdomen and helps ease lower back pain.

Appointments and key dates around now
