Day 89 of 280, first trimester

You are 12 weeks and 5 days

You and your partner will be developing your own special relationship with your baby.

191 days until your due date

You can't feel your baby move yet, but you can still interact and bond with him. Some women are happy talking to their babies and others aren't, so do what feels natural, whether out loud or in your head.

Very soon, your baby will be able to hear and recognize your voice and your partner's, as well as other sounds such as music.

You might want a nickname for your baby, such as "the bump," "the bun," or a private joke. Giving your baby an identity helps, because it's hard to talk about him or her this early, especially when you don't know the sex.

If you're still keeping the pregnancy secret from some people, a code word can be handy too.

Explainer

Racquet sports

Cut back on sports such as tennis and badminton, because quick movements and turns can upset your changing balance and raise your risk of falling.

As a matter of fact

Early reflexes

Your baby may now squirm if your abdomen is pressed.

He'll gradually develop more reflexes: his eye muscles will clench if his eyelids are touched, his toes will curl if the soles of his feet are touched, and his fingers will curl if his palm is touched.

Activities to avoid in the second trimester

Tiredness usually lifts in the second trimester, making it a great time to keep up your exercise program before you get too big to move comfortably.

But avoid high-risk exercise: anything that could make you fall, anything needing a lot of balance and agility, and exercises that involve lying on your back for long periods or twisting your upper body. Your changing center of gravity makes stumbling and falling more likely, risking injury to you and your baby.

These are best avoided in the second (and third) trimesters:

  • Vigorous exercise at high altitude (unless you're used to it)
  • Diving and scuba diving
  • Road or mountain biking
  • Rock climbing
  • Skiing, snowboarding, and waterskiing
  • Ice skating and ice hockey
  • Horse riding
  • Bungee jumping!
