Day 82 of 280, first trimester

You are 11 weeks and 5 days

Having your first scan this week, and knowing the risk of miscarriage is lower now, should help you start to relax.

198 days until your due date

This can be a very positive time, especially if you've been anxious from day one. The risk of miscarriage falls as pregnancy progresses, and by the end of this week it's no more than 1 percent.

As you enter the second trimester, you should start to feel better, and together with knowing you're past the riskiest time, this may help you relax. If you've kept your pregnancy secret, you can now enjoy telling people.

Focus on

Safety: Safe scans

Ultrasound has been used for years and is thought to be safe. Children exposed to prenatal ultrasound show no differences in speech, hearing, vision, or school performance, and no increased cancer risk. Still, ultrasound should only be done when necessary.

Ask a Nutritionist

I have a real sweet tooth. Is it OK to indulge it while pregnant?

Occasional cookies or chocolate are fine, but processed foods often contain hidden fats and sugars and few nutrients, so look for healthier sweet snacks such as fresh fruit.

Read food labels and choose options with less fat and added sugar. Look after yourself during pregnancy the way you'd think carefully about feeding your child.

Eating regular meals is one of the best ways to curb a sweet tooth, because it steadies your blood sugar and reduces cravings. Try not to go more than three hours without eating, and if you're hungry, have a healthy snack such as a chicken sandwich, low-fat yogurt, or fresh, canned, or dried fruit such as raisins or apricots.

Aim to drink about two quarts of water a day, since what feels like hunger is often dehydration. A glass or two of water may stop you reaching for the cookie jar.

As a matter of fact

A short history of ultrasound

Medical ultrasound has been used since the early 1960s.

But high-frequency echo-sounding, which ultrasound is based on, was discovered in Paris in 1880. In the early 20th century ultrasound was used as a therapy, and research into using it for diagnosis began only in the 1940s.

Explainer

Fruit for cravings

Refreshing fruit can satisfy sweet cravings, and you may feel better after a fruit salad than after a chocolate bar.
